From Patient to Advocate: Elizabeth’s Story
After surviving cryptococcal meningitis, Elizabeth has become an advocate for raising awareness of the disease and supporting others affected by it. As a member of a community advisory group, she has been involved in awareness-raising activities, including helping to explain the importance of lumbar punctures in diagnosing and treating cryptococcal meningitis. Through sharing her experiences, she hopes to encourage others to seek care early and help challenge misconceptions surrounding the disease.
- What made you decide to take part in the Stories Behind the Science series?
As someone who has experienced cryptococcal meningitis, I wanted to share my first-hand experience of what it’s like to live through this illness. By talking about my experiences, I can raise awareness of the challenges patients face and why early diagnosis and treatment is so important.
- Who do you hope will watch your story, and why?
I hope people around the world will watch my story, especially people affected by cryptococcal meningitis and their families. I also hope it helps people understand the importance of lumbar punctures, which are an essential part of diagnosing and treating cryptococcal meningitis. Many people are frightened of the procedure, so through sharing my experience and the awareness work we do in our community, I hope more people will feel confident about seeking help.
- What do you hope people take away from your story?
I want people to know that if I could do it, they can too. I hope my story gives others hope and encourages them to seek help when they need it. We need to spread love, understanding and support, rather than stigma.
- What would you say to someone thinking about getting involved as a public collaborator in research?
I would encourage them to get involved. Working together, we can raise awareness, improve health outcomes and help make a real difference in people’s lives.
