What are fungi?
Fungi are found throughout our environment and play important roles in ecosystems, food production and medicine. Most fungi are harmless to humans, but a small number can cause serious fungal infections. These infections can be life-threatening, particularly for people with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions.
Fungal infections cause more than 2 million deaths each year, yet they receive far less attention and research investment than many other infectious diseases. Research is essential to improve our understanding of fungal biology, develop new diagnostics and treatments, and address emerging challenges such as antifungal resistance.
Through research, collaboration and public engagement, we can improve understanding of fungal infections and develop new approaches to prevent, diagnose and treat these infections.
