Tactile Fungal Textiles

The MRC CMM have continued to work with Exeter College to undertake Phase II and III of our textiles project. In 2023/24 we worked with a small cohort of students to produce garments based the research carried out at the Centre. Since them we have massively expanded the project to feature all first-year students studying for their Textile Diploma.

Working closely with the teaching staff at Exeter College, we co-produced a large-scale project to produce textile artworks that reflected current medical mycology investigations. The students had the opportunity to visit the Centre and hear a wide variety of talks from our research team and provided with a portfolio of background reading and information about why we do the work that we do at the Centre.

The college staff came up with the idea of fungal ‘petri dishes’ being represented in embroidery hoops, with smaller associated works being housed in actual petri dishes.

To highlight the artworks that the students produced we organised a public showcase at Positive Lights in Exeter city centre.

This collaboration has proved to be so popular that we are now in the third year of running, with plans to continue in 2026/27.
